Julian Work Calendar
I was led to this fine book from the Guy Gavriel Kay books; it is an agreeable and easy going account of the world–well, the English world–in the year 1000. The authors have taken the charming old Julius Work Calendar for the structure of the book, with each month becoming a chapter, each illustrated by the sprightly drawings which decorate the original, showing the characteristic actions for that month. The writing is lively and entertaining, the facts presented are interesting and well chosen, and the book is a very pleasant read. If only all history could be so!
