A friend lent me this book knowing how much I enjoyed Patrick Fermor’s Time of Gifts, and I am just loving it– a huge and chatty history of the Habsburg Empire, of the amazingly horrid and unbelievably daft complications and wars and invasions and expeditions and fabulosity beyond the dreams of avarice that made Europe what it is today.
It is a dense book, crammed with incident, and no way to remember all of it or even remember an outline. But I am enjoying the rush of history, the stories, the crazy people–and also am charmed with the ability to look things up online, see the castles and forts and paintings and statues. Without having to TRAVEL, do you see.
Some lovely quotes here.
